Reading

Luke 24:32

They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?”

Devotion

"The Road to Emmaus" is a modern icon written by Sr. Marie-Paul Farran, OSB, from the Benedictine monastery on the Mount of Olives in Israel.  The left side portrays the disciples on the road with Jesus.  The right side shows them at table together.   Should you desire a copy, it may be found here: The Road to Emmaus - Icon Reproduction – Altar + Home

I like the intensity of this icon.  There is a vibrancy to it.  The mountain and the homestead roof overarched by the scripture and a dove-like image have a flow to them.   The image of Cleopas and his companion, portrayed as a woman, likely his wife (see John 19:25, Matthew 27:56, Mark 15:40) have eyes locked on the figure of Jesus.  The metaphor of “burning hearts” conveys intense emotional and spiritual impact, similar to the fire in the Book of Acts, part two of Luke's Gospel, that inspired the early church.

To pray with an icon gaze at the icon attentively, noticing details, colors, and symbols, which often convey spiritual truths. Observe where your eyes are drawn and reflect on the emotions or thoughts that arise. Many icons, especially of Christ or the saints, are designed to meet your gaze, inviting a personal encounter with God. Allow the eyes of the figure to “speak” to your heart, fostering a receptive and contemplative state.  What does this icon say to you, dear reader?

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
Just as You walked with the disciples on the road,
walk with me today.
Let my heart burn within me
as Your Word comes alive,
as Your truth unfolds before my eyes.
When doubts cloud my vision,
remind me that You are near.
When the journey feels long,
let Your voice be my strength.
Open the Scriptures to me,
not only to understand with my mind,
but to be transformed in my soul.
May every step I take
be guided by the warmth of Your presence
and the fire of Your love.
Amen.
