Midweek Devotion 3 December 2025

Reading

Romans 15:4

Whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.

Devotion

This week's painting is Leonardo da Vinci's "Saint John the Baptist."  Completed circa 1516, it may be da Vinci's last work.  The painting lives in the Louvre museum in Paris.

I love the enigmatic smile, reminiscent of da Vinci's "Mona Lisa."  The John portrayed here knows things.  He has a bit of an otherworldliness to him.  I find it a bit unsettling.  He emerges from darkness into light by a masterful use of chiaroscuro, the dramatic contrast of light and shadow.  He points up and toward the cross.

John prepares the way.  He is a prepper.  People who prepare are, at their core, manifesting hope--a hope that may be in defiance of conventional wisdom.  "Hope in what?" is always a good thing to explore.  John points toward the hope of a messiah who will bring the rule of God.  The enigmatic expression on da Vinci's John makes me think that, though he is pointing up, true transcendence, the connection to a higher power, is actually found by going deeper within.  Take a moment this week, dear reader, to explore those things that bring you hope.  For what are they preparing you?

Prayer

Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer)
